India drops to fifth place in Maldives' top ten tourism markets...

Indian tourists have moved from being the third largest group to the fifth largest group in the maldives within three weeks, according to data from the country's tourism ministry. The maldives is known for its immaculate beaches and luxury travel. With prime minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to the indian archipelago in the Arabian Sea, there has been a rise in diplomatic tensions between india and the maldives, which corresponds with this change.

Indian travelers, who will account for around 11% of the Maldives' tourism industry in 2023, have long been a significant market for the country. But Modi's beach trip to lakshadweep on january 2 sparked a storm of controversy that resulted in a sharp drop in the number of indian tourists.

What's the dispute about?

Some in the maldives perceived Modi's visit to lakshadweep and his subsequent social media posts as a calculated attempt to draw visitors away from their country. A wave of anti-Maldives sentiment erupted on indian social media platforms following remarks made by three junior ministers in the Mohamed Muizzu cabinet disparagingly about the prime minister. social media users began to share the hashtag #BoycottMaldives along with stories of travel plans to the island nation being canceled. In support of the country, the indian travel website EaseMyTrip halted reservations for flights to the Maldives.

The president of the maldives suspended the officials after they removed their offensive remarks about india from their posts. The foreign minister of the maldives, Moosa Zameer, described the statements made by the officials as "unacceptable" and stated that his nation is dedicated to "fostering a positive and constructive dialogue with our partners."

The Maldives' government cannot afford to get into a fight with india since doing so would be financially disastrous. This should be seen by everyone, Shaheed said.
