Telangana govt to release 231 prisoners under special remission

The telangana government announced on Friday, january 26, the early release of 231 inmates, including 212 life offenders and 19 non-life convicts, for good behavior. This judgment was taken under the Governor's authority as conferred under Article 161 of the indian Constitution.
"The governor of a State shall have the power to grant pardons, reprieves, respites or remissions of punishment or to suspend, remit or commute the sentence of any person convicted of any offense against any law relating to a matter to which the executive power of the State extends," the clause reads.
The release follows the government's habit of considering prisoner releases on key holidays such as Republic Day (January 26), Independence Day (August 15), and gandhi jayanthi (October 2).
This is the third case of premature release in the state, following earlier permits in 2016 and 2020. A list for premature release was presented last year, but the governor did not authorise it.
"On this occasion, 212 lifetime convict inmates and 19 non-life convict convicts with good prison conduct are picked for premature release. This would allow the inmates to completely reintegrate into society and pave the way for a crime-free telangana, according to a statement from the state administration.
