Cyclone Michaung batters east Telangana
Over the last 24 hours, Cyclone Michaung caused havoc in various mandals of the bhadradri kothagudem area, delivering exceptionally heavy rain and interrupting daily life. According to the telangana State Development Planning Society, Aswaraopeta Mandal bore the brunt of the storm, registering an astounding 31 cm of rainfall from tuesday 8.30 am to wednesday 8.30 am.
Maddukuru in Chandrugonda mandal came in second place with 30.8 cm of rain. Significant rains fell in Dammapeta, Annapureddypally, and kothagudem mandals, ranging from 26 cm to 21.2 cm. During this period, 12 mandals had extremely heavy rainfall, while nine others received significant rainfall. Gangaram and Sadasivapalem in Sathupalli mandal received 17.4 cm and 16.6 cm of rain, respectively. 15.8 cm of rain fell on Sathupalli.
Kinnerasani project officials in Paloncha Mandal responded by opening two gates and releasing 8,000 cusecs of extra water downstream. The Peddavagu project administrators in Gummadavalli village, Aswaraopet Mandal, discharged extra water, flooding paddy fields and halting coal output in SCCL opencast mines.
The rupture in the bund of the Perantala tank near Dammapet mandal headquarters exacerbated the situation, causing flooding in paddy fields and affecting thousands of acres of standing crops. Dammapet's vehicular traffic was hampered.
Agricultural officials were directed to conduct a survey of rain-damaged crops and provide comprehensive findings.
Farmers in Khammam, Wyra, Aswaraopet, Yellandu, Pinapaka, and Palair constituencies sustained massive losses as the torrential rain devastated ready-for-harvest crops like as rice, cotton, maize, and chilli. Affected farmers are pleading with the government to offer compensation and aid as soon as possible.
The storm had an impact on coal output at two singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) open-cast mines in Jayashankar bhupalpally district.
The cyclone's impacts were felt in Hyderabad, where temperatures dropped to 23-24 degrees Celsius throughout the day.
Meanwhile, Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director-general of the india Meteorological Department (IMD), stated on wednesday that the deep depression caused by Cyclone Michaung has decreased and would weaken further shortly. He did, however, predict that the rain would continue for a few more hours.
"South andhra pradesh is completely clear now, telangana and tamil Nadu are also clear, in these places, there won't be any heavy rainfall now due to the cyclone," stated Dr. Mohapatra in an interview.
