"Engaging In Theatrics": Jagdeep Dhankhar, Derek O'Brien Face Off In Parliament

S Venkateshwari
A clash between Chairman jagdeep dhankhar and trinamool congress mp Derek O'Brien today in the rajya sabha signaled a significant escalation in the Manipur violence issue after a week of sloganeering and continuous interruptions.
Mr. O'Brien objected strongly and stated he was citing the house rules and demanded a meaningful discussion on Manipur after the chairman accused the TMC mp of "engaging in theatrics" on a regular basis.
When Mr. Dhankhar was addressing the house and pointing out that the frequent disturbances in the house do not inspire respect among the people, a fight broke out. Additionally, he mentioned that he was receiving feedback from all around, expressing "alarming concern" about the state of affairs in the House.
"I have now received 47 notifications under Rule 267 from people expressing their worry over the state of affairs in Manipur. I have tolerated this condition during the whole week, the Chairman stated.

"I receive feedback from all around, and it shows frightening, worrying concern. Therefore, I would want to make an appeal to the wisdom of the house to rise above political interests and cooperate in a way such that a brief discussion—which I have agreed to—can take place.  Mr. O'Brien interrupted the Chairman, saying "We are aware of this," as he was bringing out the pattern of very few Rule 267 notifications being accepted and asserting that the whole country observes events in Parliament.

The Chairman then commanded Mr. O'Brien to "lend your ears and take your seat" as the situation increasingly deteriorated. Mr. Dhankhar interrupted the TMC mp and remarked, "Mr. Derek O'Brien, it has been your practise to act theatrically. You stand up each time, believing it is your right. The bare minimum that you can demonstrate is respect for the chair. You get up and put on a show if I say something.
The TMC mp had a strong response to this, saying, "Theatrics? I disagree with the term "theatrics." I'm merely quoting the House's rules. Given the gravity of the situation, we need a meaningful discussion about Manipur under Rule 267, a crucial emergency mechanism.
