Action needed to release 9 Tamil Nadu fishermen: Chief Minister's letter to External Affairs
In that letter, I recently requested that tamil Nadu fishermen step up diplomatic efforts to resolve this long-standing problem in the data-face of continued captivity by the Sri Lankan Navy. However, the chief minister has stated that he is writing this letter with deep concern and feeling disappointed about the continued arrest of tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy.
The chief minister has mentioned in his letter that when the President of sri lanka was on a state visit to india, the prime minister had insisted on discussing this important issue and that he believed that the meeting with the President of sri lanka would lead to engaging in constructive negotiations on the issue of fishermen and finding a permanent solution respecting the rights and livelihoods of indian and Sri Lankan fishermen.
In this situation, despite high-level negotiations between india and sri lanka, incidents of attacks and arrests of tamil Nadu fishermen continue. 9 fishermen from tamil Nadu and their 2 barges bearing registration numbers IND-TN11-MM-837 and IND-TN11-MM-257 were captured by the Sri Lankan Navy yesterday.
Tamil Nadu fishermen are said to be facing severe hardships due to constant arrests and confiscation of their boats, and these incidents are straining bilateral relations and causing severe socio-economic consequences for the affected families.
In this situation, the chief minister has asked for the release of the arrested fishermen and the safe return of their confiscated boats, and reiterates the need to find a permanent solution acceptable to both sides to protect the fishing rights in the Pak gulf region. The letter said that all possible diplomatic measures should be taken in this regard.
