Tomato Prices Increased 3x times in Chennai Tamilnadu
In Koyambedu market, the supply of tomatoes has decreased for the past one week and its price has increased. Due to this, the consumption of tomatoes in households has decreased. Foods made with tomatoes such as tomato rice and tomato soup are also being avoided in hotels.
In Koyambedu market for the last few days, the total price was up to Rs.70 per kg, but yesterday it rose to a new high of Rs.100. In the foreign markets, depending on the thickness of the tomato, it is being sold at retail between Rs.40 and Rs.120 per kg.
Despite the increase in tomato prices in the market, the tcs farm continues to sell at Rs.60 per kg in green shops. Officials of the Co-operative Department said that the government has promised to allocate the amount from the sustainability fund when the purchase price rises, even if it is above Rs 60.
Regarding the rise in the price of tomatoes, Koyambedu Flower, fruit and fruit Wholesalers Association President M. Thiagarajan said: Usually 800 tonnes of tomatoes come to the Koyambedu market every day. But only 300 tons arrived yesterday. A few days ago, it was selling at Rs.70 per kg, but it has come down to Rs.60.
Since then it was sold between Rs.90 and Rs.100 per kg yesterday due to lack of supply. Due to the lack of stable prices for tomatoes, when the price of tomatoes falls, many farmers avoid growing tomatoes. Due to the recent drop in tomato prices, farmers have avoided tomato cultivation for the past two months.
As only a few people have cultivated it, the production has decreased and its price has gone up. In Andhra and karnataka states data-bordering tamil Nadu, there is fierce competition among traders to buy tomatoes. This is what he said.
