The murder of a youngster who was shot during a traffic check has been the cause of riots that have lasted for more than three nights, according to French President Emmanuel Macron, who on friday blamed "video games" for the unrest. "It sometimes feels like some of them are reliving in the streets the video games that have intoxicated them," Macron remarked during a crisis security meeting to tackle the increasing violence in the nation.
As many of those detained are young, the French President urged parents to keep their kids off the streets. He was reported by The Guardian as saying, "It is the parents' responsibility to keep them at home, and therefore it is important for everyone's peace of mind that parental responsibility can be fully exercised."
Additionally, Macron said that social media sites like Snapchat and TikTok were being used to coordinate the riots, and he encouraged them to delete the "most sensitive content" about the unrest. According to Macron, "we've seen them [Snapchat, TikTok, and other platforms] serve as places where violent gatherings have been organized, but there's also a form of mimicry of the violence which for some young people leads them to lose touch with reality."
