
Will Katchatheevu Island return to India ?
Kachchathivu is located in Pak Strait, 12 nautical miles from Rameswaram and 8 nautical miles from Nedundi, Sri Lanka. Its total area is 285 acres. Its maximum width is 300 meters. The island can be reached by boat in about two and a half hours from Rameswaram and about one and a half hours from Nedundivu and Thalaimannar in Sri Lanka.
Kachchathivi, owned by the Sethupathi kings of Ramanathapuram, was leased by the Maraikayas of Mandapam and used for pearling and fishing. In the Ramanathapuram district Gazetteer issued by the government of tamil Nadu in 1972, Kachathevi is mentioned as a part of the integrated Ramanathapuram district and the island's survey number is 1250.
Tarai Varpu: An agreement was signed on 28 june 1974 between the Governments of india and Sri Lanka. In it, the maritime boundary line between the two countries was defined. With this, the island of Kacha was ceded to Sri Lanka. In this agreement, the right of indian fishermen to fish and the right of pilgrims to go to Kachchathivu Anthony temple without passport, visa etc. documents were mentioned.
AITUC Fishermen's Union State Secretary Senthilvel said that after 50 years of Kachadivu's transfer of hands, the State Secretary of AITUC said: In the last 49 years when Kachadivu was handed over to sri lanka, 360 tamil Nadu fishermen have been shot dead by the Sri Lankan Navy as they have crossed the Indo-Sri Lankan international sea boundary.
Both congress and bjp have no intention to recover Kachcha Island. Both AIADMK and DMK are taking actions like approaching the supreme court or urging the central government through letters on the Kachcha Island issue. Our courts cannot interfere in foreign policy.
No formal legislation was passed in the indian Parliament for the ceding of Kachchathiwai to sri lanka through the Treaty. As a result, the UN said that the grant of Kachath Island to sri lanka was invalid. He said that the advocate should be rescued through the international council.
