Coal Shortage and now Lorry Strike - Power Cut problem grows

G GOWTHAM
Truckers went on strike to demand a raise in the rent at private coal terminals. In the Tiruvallur district, a private coal terminal is located in Kattupalli, near Minjur. More than 500 tipper trucks and trailer trucks deliver coal from here to private thermal power facilities in various districts of tamil Nadu, including steel mills. Since 2020, the rents for contract trucks transporting coal have remained unchanged.

In this situation, the private coal terminal will have to raise truck rent by 30% due to rising prices of gasoline, diesel, and spare parts, as well as rising tariffs. Last month, at a meeting of the Chennai, Ennore, and Kattupalli region tipper lorry and trailer lorry owners' association in the madhavaram area of Chennai, it was decided that if no resolution was made by May 1, an indefinite strike would begin on May 2. The coal terminal management, on the other hand, did not engage in any rent talks.

Owners of tipper trucks and trailer trucks went on strike indefinitely as a result of this. For the second day in a row, the struggle went on. As a result, production at private coal-fired thermal power plants and factories has suffered.
