PM Modi considering Special Status to Andhra Pradesh?

SIBY JEYYA
At a time when everyone has realised that Andhra Pradesh's special category status is a closed chapter, the recent reports from New delhi suggest that the Centre may take the demand into consideration. According to these sources, the three-member committee set up by the Union home ministry to look into the lingering issues surrounding the state division of andhra pradesh will meet virtually on february 17 to discuss them.

The committee, which includes the Union home secretary as well as senior finance department officials from andhra pradesh and telangana – S S Rawat and P ramakrishna Rao, respectively – has set the agenda for the meeting and distributed it to the two states. According to sources, the agenda includes various problems addressed by both states in their representations to the Centre, by their MPs in parliament, and by representatives of the two states during Union home minister amit Shah's southern zonal council meeting in tirupati in November.

The agenda featured nine items, including the partition of the state finance corporation, power consumption by ap and telangana, bank deposit sharing between the two states, the backward areas development fund, revenue deficit compensation, and tax rebates. The demand for special category status for andhra pradesh is the most intriguing item on the Centre's agenda.
