AIADMK Indira Kumari Jailed for 5 years: Anti-Corruption
AIADMK Indira Kumari is accused of corruption and according to today's verdict, she is sentenced to be jailed for 5 years. During 1991 - 1996 in the corruption case of supplying free dhoti, sari, footwear, which was provided to free-to-school children in spite of the abuse cases filed by the then minister for Social Welfare, including Indrakumari all were released.
In this case, another case was registered against Indira Kumari. The case was registered in 1997 on the basis of a complaint lodged by lakshmi Pranesh, Secretary, Department of Social Welfare. Indira Kumari, who was the Social Welfare minister during the AIADMK regime, has been charged in the case along with former Social Welfare Secretary Kirubakaran IAS, Shanmugam IAS, former director of the Rehabilitation of the Handicapped, Babu, Indira Kumari's husband and lawyer, and Indira Kumari's aide Venkata Krishnan. In this case, the CPCIT police filed the charge sheet in the chennai Primary Sessions Court. In it, they set up Babu as the Managing Trustee in 1992-96 with the intention of committing corruption and started a trust called 'Mercy Mother India' and an educational trust called Parani swathi and received money from the government.
They have swindled Rs 15.65 lakh in government money by claiming to start deaf schools and schools for the disabled. Indira Kumari, Kirubakaran and Shanmugam have abused their power and made a profit. According to the charge sheet, Babu and Venkata Krishnan were complicit in the scam and should be punished under the indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Later, the case was transferred to the Special court for MPs and MLAs in the chennai District Collectorate premises and the trial continued. In this case, the verdict is today. In it, former ministers Indira Kumari and Shanmugam Babu have been convicted. Indira Kumari gets 5 years imprisonment verdict with a fine too. Is there any hope of corruption ending soon? The way seems to be very long!!
