New Delhi: Nine new judges of the supreme court, will be administered by the indian Chief Justice (CJI) N v ramana on Tuesday, to take the oath of office, among which three women. It is the first time that nine judges take a one-go oath of office in the history of the apex court and the swearing-in-ceremony takes place in an auditorium in the additional building complex of the supreme Court.

The oath of office is traditionally given in the Courtroom of the CJI to new judges. The strength of the supreme court would rise by 33, including the CJI, from the assented strengths of 34 with the swearing-in of nine new judges on Tuesday. "This is the first time that nine judges take the oath of office in one go in the history of the supreme court of India. In a second instance, the auditorium will be the venue for the ceremony. In view of the necessity of strict compliance with COVID standards, "The public relations office of the apex court issued a press release.

In september 2027, Justice Nagarathna will be the first woman CJI. The daughter of the former CJI E S Venkataramia, Judge Nagarathna, was born on 30 october 1962. Three of these nine new judges are in line to be made the CJI, the judges Nath and Nagarathna and Narasimha.

Since its creation on 26 january 1950, the high court had only a few women judges and only 8 women judges, starting at M Fathima Beevi in 1989, were appointed in the last 71 years. Currently, after she was raised on 7 august 2018 from madras high court, Justice Indira Banerjee is the only female judge who served as Chief Justice in the Apex Court.

The five-member collegium chaired by CJI ramana at his meeting on 17 august recommended these nine names, which ended the 21-month logjam about the appointment to the highest court of new judges. The stalemate over the appointment led to a situation in which, after CJI Ranjan Gogoi's retirement on 17 november 2019, no single name for a judgeship in the apex court would be recommended.
